Gir science that frames every dossier
Morphology
Red coat predominant (~80%); red with white spots common. Convex forehead, pendulous leaf-like ears with terminal notch, lyre/half-moon horns, thoracic hump, loose skin and dewlap for heat dissipation.
A2 tendency
Indigenous cattle show high A2 beta-casein allele frequency. In a multi-breed Indian study, Gir A2A2 genotype frequency was 0.93; mean A2 allele frequency across indigenous breeds ~0.91. Exotic breeds showed much higher A1 frequency. Individual status still needs a lab test — not published on these five station cards.
Heat hardiness
As a tropical zebu, Gir is selected historically under heat, sparse forage, and parasite pressure. Morphological heat-dissipation traits (dewlap, skin folds, ear area, hump) and lower reported overall mortality vs exotic dairy types support use in Indian climates with less extreme cooling infrastructure than Holstein systems.
